Donald D. Roy CLAREMONT — Donald D. Roy, 88, of Sullivan Street in Claremont, died peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2022, surrounded by his family. He was born in Berlin, New Hampshire, on Aug. 15, 1933, the son of Louis E. and Lydia (Drouin) Roy and had been a Claremont resident since 1963. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School, Class of 1951, where he served as president of his class for four years, as well as goalie for the hockey team. Following high school, Don played semiprofessional hockey for the Berlin Maroons tending the net. He had been employed as a foreman by the Brown Co. in Berlin, New Hampshire. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He graduated from New England Institute of Mortuary Science in 1959. Don then began his career in funeral service working for Fleury Funeral Home in Berlin, New Hampshire, Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, Vermont, McCusker Funeral Home in Claremont, New Hampshire, before he and his wife, Doris, opened Roy Funeral Home on April 1, 1973. He and Doris retired in 1996 and wintered for many years in Dade City, Florida, where they enjoyed the sun, golf and making new friends. He was an avid golfer both here and in Florida. He was a member of the Fr. Cote Council #1820 third- and fourth-degree Knights of Columbus. Don was a quiet man and led by example, a trait that he will long be remembered for. Members of his family include two sons, James R. Roy and his wife, Lori, Claremont, New Hampshire, Jon D. Roy and his wife, Sheila Pierson-Roy, Strafford, New Hampshire; eight grandchildren, Michelle Roy, Benjamin Roy, Timothy Roy, Kayla Roy, Zachary Schucart, Nicholas Roy, Jordan Schucart, Hayleigh Roy; six great-grandchildren, Calvin, Reagan, Leah, Mason, Turner and Pierson; a sister, Louise Roy and her husband, Eduardo Suarez, Sherbrooke, PQ, Canada; a brother, Maurice Roy and his wife, Debbie, Ayers Cliff, PQ, Canada; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Doris (Jutras) Roy; two brothers, Dr. Richard Roy, David Roy; and a sister, Gloria Mastro. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Sebastian Susairaj officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
