BARRE, Vt. — The Fair Haven bowling team captured its second state championship in the last three years, besting Brattleboro 4-2 in the championship match Saturday afternoon at Twin City Lanes.
“It was tough every single match. Everybody we played was so good,” said Fair Haven coach Vern Seaver.
Nick Snide, AJ McManus, Josh Kennedy, Keenan Donaldson and Hunter Greene were key in the Slaters winning the championship on Saturday, according to Seaver.
“My seniors (Nick Snide and AJ McManus) really took charge,” Seaver said. “They had to keep everybody going and they did a great job.”
Fair Haven started with a 4-1 win against No. 4 seed South Burlington, winning the opening game and the final three games of the best of seven match. The Slaters had scores over 200 in three of those four games.
Fair Haven continued its day with an upset series win against No. 1 seed Randolph. The Slaters won 169-129 in the opening game, before losing the next to the Galloping Ghosts. Fair Haven responded with three straight wins to pull off the upset, winning the final game 235-234.
The Slaters moved into the finals, playing No. 3 Brattleboro, making its first trip to the finals, and Fair Haven finished strong, winning the last two games to secure the championship.

WINOOSKI, Vt. — Defending state champion Green Mountain ran into a buzz saw on Saturday in the Division III quarterfinals of the boys basketball playoffs. No. 1 Winooski rolled to a 61-34 victory but not before the Chieftains stood up to them.
Green Mountain trailed just 23-20 at the half.
“We ran into foul trouble in the first half but we had the bench step up,” Green Mountain coach Brian Rapanotti said. “The second half was a little different story.”
Reid Hryckiewicz led the Chieftains with 14 points.
“He played really well,” Rapanotti said.
Branden Rose added eight points for the No. 8 Chieftains who finish at 13-8.
Sharraj McIver led the Spartans with 21 points.
WOMEN’S HOCKEYElmira 4, Castleton 0
ELMIRA, N.Y. — The Castleton University women’s hockey team’s season came to an end, falling to top-seeded Elmira 4-0 in the New England Hockey Conference championship game Saturday afternoon.
The Soaring Eagles scored a pair in the first and third periods. Emma Crocker led the charge with two of the goals.
CU goalie Kirsten DiCicco made 46 saves.
The Spartans finished at 15-10-2.
Midd 2, Amherst 0
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The top-seeded Middlebury College women’s hockey captured its 11th NESCAC Championship, as the Panthers skated to a 2-0 triumph over visiting Amherst on Sunday in Kenyon Arena.
With the win, Middlebury (24-0-0) earned the conference’s automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Tournament with the tournament field being announced later today. The third-seeded Mammoths finished their season at 14-9-2.
The Panthers tied the program record for consecutive victories at 24, a mark set over parts of the 2004-05 season and 2005-06 seasons.
Middlebury’s goals came from Claudia Vira and Katie Hargrave.

BOSTON — The best athletes in the region were competing at the New England indoor track championships over the weekend at Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
Fair Haven’s Luke Williams was 18th in the long jump with a jump of 19 feet, 9 inches.
The Slaters’ Alexandra Williams was 23rd in the 300 meter race, finishing in 44.54 seconds. She was 24th in the preliminary race of the 55-meter dash and was part of the Fair Haven team, along with Ayame Merkel, Ella Kuehn and Olivia Almeida, in the 4×200 relay.
Green Mountain’s Grace Tyrrell was 25th in the 300 meters and Berkley Hutchins was 27th in the shot put.
MEN’S LACROSSECanton 19, Castleton 14
CANTON, N.Y. — The Castleton University men’s lacrosse team fell 19-14 to SUNY Canton on the road in Saturday’s season opener.
Chris LaBonte earned his sixth career hat-trick, leading Castleton with three goals. Casey Meczywor and Hunter Sarro followed with two apiece, while seven different Spartans notched a lone goal.
The Kangaroos were led by Alex Jacobs, who notched six goals and an assist.
Castleton is at Rivier on Wednesday before hosting St. Joseph (Connecticut) for the home opener on March 12 at 4 p.m.
COLLEGE BASEBALLCastleton splits
GALLOWAY, N.J. — The Castleton University baseball team salvaged a doubleheader split at Stockton University Saturday afternoon, dropping the opening game 4-3 before bouncing back to win 2-0 in the second half of the twin bill in shutout fashion.
In the opener, Castleton scored three runs across the first two innings, but were held scoreless the rest of the way. Ryan Lawrence had three hits and Evan Keegan had two in the loss.
Starting pitcher Riley Orr dealt four innings, allowing just one earned run while collecting four strikeouts. Max Olmsted struck out five in relief and surrendered two earned runs.
Two runs for the Spartans in the sixth inning were the difference in the second game. Keegan and Hunter Perkins had the RBIS. Zack Marlow and Aubrey Ramey combined for the shutout for CU.
Castleton (3-3) is back in action Thursday, at Newport News Apprentice School (Va.) for a doubleheader.
MEN’S TENNISCSC 6, Castleton 3
The Castleton University fell to Colby-Sawyer College 6-3 Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans got wins from Miki Almirall Perez over Charie Griffius 6-4 and 7-5, Simon Brenter by forfeit and Brenter and Rowan Kidder’s double’ duo also won by forfeit.
WOMEN’S LACROSSECU drops two
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Union College dominated against the Castleton University women’s lacrosse team, winning 20-1 Saturday afternoon.
Lacey Greenamyre scored the opening goal for the Spartans, assisted by Kimberly McCarthy, but Union scored 20 unanswered the rest of the way.
Grace Heiting led the Dutchwomen with six goals and two assists. Five other women scored multiple goals.
The Spartans responded with a strong performance on Sunday against St. Joseph (Conn.), but fell 13-9.
Castleton was led by four goals from McCarthy, while Maddie Brasser had three scores and an assist in the game. Greenamyre assisted three separate goals and grabbed nine draw controls. Makenzie Dinger and Jenna Banta had five goals apiece for USJ.
