Angela Maynes

Angela Maynes CLAREMONT — If you’re reading this, I’m dead. Hopefully, I died with Grace. I gave up writing the whole thing, so I found someone who could do it better. Angela Maynes, born Angelina Anna Maria Massa, passed away March 29, 2022, at the age of 84. Angela was born on July 11, 1937, the only child of Nicola Massa, of Procida, Italy and Concetta Valentino, of Brooklyn, New York. Her father passed when she was 2 years old. She spent the next 10 years living with her maternal grandparents, family friends and relatives, and also attending boarding school. She then lived with her mother and stepfather, Vito Mastromauro, after their marriage in Queens, New York. After graduating from John Adams High School, she went to work for Hearst Magazines in Manhattan. She wanted a change so she went to work for Bergdorf-Goodman on 5th Avenue. She had the time of her life there. She met movie stars, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor among others. She also met First Lady Jackie Kennedy. She made friends from all over the world and got invited to go on a trip to Cuba, which she accepted. She married Edward Maynes on June 28, 1958. They had four children, Rod Maynes, Maria White and Nick Maynes. She was hired by the NYPD but while she was on the wait list, she worked as a high school crossing guard. Previously, this was only done by uniformed officers. She described her first day as a “rumble” and she was in the thick of it. Eventually the family moved to Newport, New Hampshire, and she went to work for the Newport PD as a dispatcher and crossing guard. In 1970, she started working for the Claremont PD under a federal grant for pedestrian safety. She ran bicycle safety and got a “safe town” built with mock buildings, cars and bicycles for the children’s use and reinforced the proper way to behave on the streets and on a bike. To keep the grant for Claremont, she went to Concord each year and gave a presentation. She was able to keep the grant in Claremont for three years. She attended St. Anselm College, Hawthorne College and Keene State College at night working for a sociology degree. She was invited to be a part of the New Hampshire Police Academy and spent more than six years as a squad advisor and assistant commandant. She was president of the Claremont Police Unit soon after they joined the AFL-CIO and was able to secure the first union contract in the city of Claremont. Through the years, she got many commendations and awards for her outstanding work. After she retired from the Claremont PD, she was offered a job by the sheriff’s office working as a bailiff and extraditions involving females. She worked there for two years, but decided that she wanted to work for the school system. She worked in Unity and Claremont as a sub then as a para-educator. She went back to school and became a certified speech-language assistant and worked under a speech pathologist. She spent 12 years in the school system before she decided it was time to enjoy her retirement. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and learning to play the violin. She volunteered with Sew Much Comfort to sew specialty adaptive clothing for military amputees. It was exacting work. Eventually, she became the regional director of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. She loved the ocean, The Red Hat Society and most of all, her children and grandchildren. She will be sorely missed. Angela is survived by her partner of over 30 years, Pete Hickey; son Nick Maynes; granddaughter Danielle White, granddaughter Molly Blackwell and husband Michael; grandsons, Sam Maynes, Anthony Maynes and Jack Maynes; son-in-law Don White and son-in-law Tom Carpenter. She was predeceased by her son, Rod Maynes; daughter Maria (Maynes) White; and granddaughter Alana Carpenter. There will be no services at this time per Angela’s wishes. Arrangements are with Stringer Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 146 Broad St., Claremont, NH 03743. To view an online memorial or send a private message of condolence, visit www.stringerfh.com.
