Letter to the Editor: Support HB1609 as amended

Support HB1609 as amended

We in Sullivan County are not immune to the anti-abortion fervor raging across the country. As we watch extreme abortion restrictions crop up in state legislatures from Florida to Idaho, we cannot forget that New Hampshire’s first abortion ban in modern history took effect this year.

While both Democrats and Republicans immediately introduced bills to help lessen the harm caused by this new law, to date each bipartisan effort to restore liberty and freedom for pregnant Granite Staters has failed.

We have one last chance. HB1609 is a final attempt to undo the harm caused by our state’s abortion ban. As amended, HB1609 would add an exception to for fatal fetal diagnoses and get rid of the requirement that every person seeking an abortion first have an ultrasound, at every stage of pregnancy, even if the procedure is not medically necessary.

HB1609 as amended would ensure patients in complex circumstances later in pregnancy receive support and offered sound medical options — not shame, stigma, or government interference. These patients should be allowed to make decisions in concert with their medical providers; their reproductive health should not be determined by politicians.

Granite Staters are counting on the New Hampshire Legislature to pass this amended version of HB 1609. Please contact your state representative(s) and urge them to support this critical bill today!
