Constance Brown Howard CONCORD — Constance “Connie” Brown Howard died peacefully at Havenwood Heritage Heights on April 11, 2022, in Concord, New Hampshire, at the age of 90. Connie was born on Aug. 27, 1931, in Weathersfield, Vermont, to Bernard and Lillian Brown. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1949. The summer of 1949, Connie worked for Miss Sillcox, Author’s League of America, NYC, in White River Junction and stayed with her grandmother on Hillcrest Street. Her first full-time position was with Central Vermont Public Service in Windsor earning $1 per hour. She purchased her first car in 1951, a Plymouth Coupe, for $1,750. From 1951-1955, she worked in the Accounting Dept. of Bryant Chucking Grinder Co. in Springfield, Vermont. She married Dennis Howard, an artificial inseminator of dairy cattle, in 1953. They lived on Crown Point Road, Springfield, Vermont. Connie and Dennis had two daughters, Andrea Bonnar and Brenda Buck, completing the start of the alphabet ABCD. Connie was the Springfield United Methodist Church Secretary from 1960-1980. She was active in the Women’s Society, and worked with a variety of social service agencies dealing with needy folks. Connie, along with two other ladies, founded the Springfield Senior Center in 1963. The Howards hosted Church Day Camp at their apple orchard and ledges for many years. Connie was an MYF leader and a 4-H leader for the Spencer Hollow Hustlers. In 1981, the Howards moved to Grantham, New Hampshire, to be with Dennis’ father. Connie immediately became active in the town and UMC Church. She was a certified lay speaker and volunteered for just about everything: The Grantham Conservation Commission; the Recycling Committee; Zoning and Master Plan Development committees; and trustee of trust funds for nearly 20 years. Connie was a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir, served as treasurer, attended Bible study and was on numerous committees. In her later years, Connie joined the Croydon Church Bell Choir and enjoyed singing in choir, as well as with the Croydon Singers. The Howards are most remembered for their Bouldervale Farm stand at the Croydon and Grantham town line. Connie could be found making jelly, pickles, freezing and canning, mowing lawns, driving the tractor with the hay tedder, following the bailer to make sure the bails didn’t break. She was a member of the quilt guild. The 2008 Town Report was dedicated to Dennis and Connie Howard. As a member of three historical societies – Grantham, Croydon, New Hampshire, and Weathersfield, Vermont – Connie donated many historical artifacts. Connie moved to Concord in 2015 to be closer to her daughter and to enjoy the carefree living and many activities at Havenwood Heritage Heights.
