Herman J. Mann NEWPORT — On the morning of April 18, 2022, Herman Josef Mann went peacefully at home to be with the Lord. Herman was born Dec. 8, 1935, to Christina (Platz) and Josef Mann, in Cologne, Germany. In 1956, Herman immigrated from Germany to Newport, New Hampshire. In 1958, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Destroyer Courtney, where he trained to be an electrician. He served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After earning a master electrical license in 1968, he started his successful business called Mann Electric, which he operated for over 50 years. In that time, he trained two fine men who now have their own business. He was the lead singer in several rock ‘n’ roll bands playing all over the area. Elvis Presley was his idol and honored him in his music. Herman’s love of sports began in Germany, playing “kick the can” (soccer). His passion for sports and martial arts carried from his youth onto training younger generations. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his dogs, Murphy and Rusty. After retiring, he purchased an RV and enjoyed traveling with his wife, Mary, especially to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, as it was closest in ethnicity to Germany. Herman is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Ellen; daughters, Sarah Justine Cushing (Ryan) and Allison Christina Goodrich (Craig); son Anthony Josef Mann; granddaughters, Makenna Avery Goodrich and Marlo Elisabeth Goodrich; a stepson, Cory Charles, step-grandson Brandon Charles, step-granddaughter Kaylee Charles, step-great-grandson Noah Charles; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and sisters, Marlena Leavitt, Elisabeth Mann, Margaret Greenberg. There will be a private family funeral at a later date. A celebration of life with be held in mid-summer and all are welcome.
