May 12: Friends of the Dunbar Free Library Annual Meeting

The Friends of the Dunbar Free Library (Friends) will hold its Annual Meeting on May 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the lower level of the Grantham Town Hall. Following a very brief business meeting, our speaker for the evening will be Nancy Marashio, the current Chair of the Sarah Josepha Hale Award Board of Judges. The Hale Award is given each year to an accomplished writer with some connection to New England. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Roger Tory Peterson, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Ken Burns, Tomie DePaola, and Jodi Picoult are all recipients. Nancy will detail the history of this special award which is given each fall in Newport.

Nancy was inspired to become a teacher of literature and writing after hearing Robert Frost’s acceptance speech for the first Hale Award which was given in 1956 when she was a freshman at Stevens High School. She was entranced by Frost’s view from inside writing and has learned since how each writer shapes his/her readers. As a teacher in high schools, middle schools, and for almost three decades in community college as well as in Adventures in Learning (AIL), Nancy loves to partner with learners in deepening the insights each brings to the learning conversation. In addition, she is also on the AIL Board as well as the State Board of the League of Women Voters NH. Nancy has generously donated her honorarium for the evening to the Dunbar Free Library!

This meeting at the Grantham Town Hall, 300 Route 10 South, is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Social distancing and masks are encouraged.
