Final Predictions Before Shrine

CLAREMONT- Our area has an unbelievable amount of talent stepping on the field for the “Granddaddy” of all football games on Saturday. I reached out to our area football coaches to get a feel for what they think will happen on the field, and their thoughts. It is pretty incredible to have so many local players on the teams, so here is what our local coaches think.

Bob Lockerby- Bellows Falls Head Football Coach: Vermont 28, New Hampshire 20

“It is great to support the Shriners and help raise funds for the people who are so deserving.”

Orion Binney- Fall Mountain Head Football Coach: New Hampshire 24, Vermont 14

“I think NH might have trouble with the wishbone early and those Vermont running backs will have some success but once the defense settles in they’ll be ok. I think the New Hampshire offensive line will really set the tone for the day and create some big holes for the New Hampshire H skill position players. I think my guys will have a good impact too. Brady will have one of his long catches and Luke will make some big plays wherever he ends up playing.”

John Proper- Newport Football Head Coach: New Hampshire 28, Vermont 21

“I anticipate it to be a great game. We only have one kid from Newport, Devyn Heino on the team this year, but I’m sure he’ll see a lot of action. In my four years as the head coach of Newport I feel that the D3 & D4 teams sometimes get overlooked when it comes to the Chad and Shrine games.”

PJ Lovely- Newport Football Assistant Coach: New Hampshire 30, Vermont 16

“One sack from Newport’s Devyn Heino!”

Todd Aiken-Springfield Football Head Coach: Vermont 18, New Hampshire 12

“I may be biased due to inside knowledge of being at shrine camp all week. But I believe Vermont takes it this year. With the style of offenses that both teams are running I believe a lower scoring game is what you’ll see. Both teams will try to grind it out with the run game.” Aiken is the defensive line coach for this year’s Vermont shrine team.

Josh Duford- Stevens Football Head Coach: New Hampshire 21, Vermont 14

“I love to watch the fans, the parents are all just so proud of their kids. To see some of the reactions is just unforgettable. There is so much support for this game and the tradition is unmatched. I’m looking for some great games from our local talent, they will open some eyes and I think the size advantage favors New Hampshire.” Going with the 603.

Paul Silva-Stevens Football Offensive Coordinator : New Hampshire 21, Vermont 16

“I’ve coached in this game twice and it’s like no other experience I can describe. The camaraderie of spending a week at camp makes for some incredible friendships and memories that last a lifetime. It really hits you when the teams meet the king and queen and realize just what the game is all about. It’s just a privilege to be a part of this great tradition.”

Matt Bean- Stevens High football Special Teams and JV Coach: New Hampshire 21, Vermont 7

“The Shrine game is a wonderful and important tradition. Not only because it is a competitive match-up between New Hampshire and Vermont, but more importantly what it provides. Anytime that people in need are benefiting from a cause, it is important, especially when it is children in hospitals. When it comes to the game itself, it certainly has become more competitive in recent years with the addition of the East/West game in New Hampshire.”

Greg Balch- Windsor Football Head Coach: Vermont 20, New Hampshire 14

“I am expecting a run-heavy game plan for both teams and the clock to move quickly. I believe that Special teams could play a big role. I am predicting strong showings from Bellows Falls, Windsor, Hartford, and Woodstock selections! Go Vermont.”

Jamie Richardson- Windsor Football Defensive Coach: Vermont 20, New Hampshire 13

“I don’t think Vermont’s offense will light up the scoreboard, so they will have to win it with their Defense. Defense and Special Teams come through for Vermont. As a kid and the game being played at Dartmouth, it was a fixture of my childhood. We went to the parade and game every year. But it was when I got older that I truly knew how special this game really was. Then I was lucky enough to coach Vermont’s defense in the 2018 game. WOW, what an experience. To see what it takes to put on such a huge event and being a part of seeing some of the Shriner hospital patients and to hear their stories was priceless. That puts it all into perspective. Not to mention, coaching the state’s best athletes…what a week!! I want to wish all the players and coaches on both sides the best of luck. Play hard, stay healthy and have fun! I’ll never bet against my Green Mountain State!

Chris Shaban — Eagle Times Sports Editor: Vermont 23, New Hampshire 18

The backfield of Vermont has horses from our area that are a load. With bruising runners on the Green Mountain side consisting of Ben Gilbert, Jed Lober and Jeb Mornier from state championship teams, they will be tough to slow down. New Hampshire could put up some points with the FM connection of Luke Gay and Brady Elliott. It would be fantastic to see quarterbacks Gay and Jon Terry dueling against each other, both are tough and can run and have played against each other since elementary school. Devyn Heino could explode for New Hampshire, and Sam Presch can do a lot from multiple positions. It will be interesting to see how lineman Dalton Clifford and Pat Barbour control the line, and their play could be game changing, and you can’t forget about Austin Gauld, his breakaway speed might be the difference.

It is amazing to have so many local players on the teams from the old Connecticut Valley League (CVL).

Congratulations to all the players, coaches and families of everyone involved and especially all the Shriners.

“Strong legs run so weak legs may walk”.
