CLAREMONT — Under a hot sun on Saturday morning, the Stevens Cardinals and Mascoma Royals met for a scrimmage with high expectations in Claremont.

With Stevens nearing 40 players on this year’s team, the field was divided up with all the big lineman on one end while the remaining offense and defense players on the other end. Each team took turns working on plays and formations with contact being held in check as much as possible.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen more unselfish play than I have today,” said new Cardinals Head Coach Josh Duford (SHS 08”). “This is just fantastic. The attitudes are outstanding.”

A couple of seniors are expected to play a big role this year for the Cardinals. Colby Shepard and Carson Vielguth will be tasked with controlling the middle of the field on defense. ”This is a tough and hungry team, I just wanted to hit someone and get this going,” said Shepard.

Stevens will be road warriors for the first two games of the season as they will head to Inter-Lakes Moltonborough on September 3rd, then to Monadnock on September 9th before welcoming Campbell on September 16th for a game under the lights at Barnes Park.

“I want a ring, we are going to work as hard as possible,” said Veilguth.
