NEWPORT — Even with practice being forced inside, there is optimism abound as Shannon Martin takes charge of the Newport Field Hockey team this season. “We are young but full of athletes, with only 2 seniors out of the 15 players, this really isn’t a rebuilding year but a year to move forward,” said Martin, who also is the Principal at Newport Middle High School.
The Tigers open their season on Friday as they will have another new coach for the two seniors. “We’ve had three different coaches since my freshman year, but this team is really focused. I think we’ll have a great year,” said Bella Osgood, who began playing field hockey in 5th grade.
With Stevens just down the road, this is a rivalry that has even more meaning than ever. “As a Stevens graduate, playing against the Cardinals is something I’m looking forward to. Stevens Head Coach Patty Deschaine and I are great friends, and they have such a good program and it’s always special when Newport plays Stevens,” said Martin.
“We need to play up to our potential, we have a great returning group of dedicated players and I expect us to make a deep playoff run,” said senior Maddy Norris.
“We are ready, and I am dedicating this season to Mr. Christensen. He was my first high school coach and such a great person,” said Osgood.
