LTE: Claremont Adopt-a-Spot

Do you have a special place in Claremont where you walk, drive, picnic, enjoy sports, relax? Does litter there disturb you?

If so, you can “adopt” your favored spot, and join the many community groups and individuals who spruce up our city. They’re caring for locations such as: parks; streets; trails; gardens; streams and riverbanks.

Adopt-a-Spot is a program run by Claremont’s Parks and Recreation Department. Residents choose areas to beautify, picking up litter and also weeding and planting flowers. Already, at least fifteen Claremont areas have been adopted by groups, individuals, and organizations.

Cups, wrappers, cigarette butts, cans, and bottles dropped on the ground and into bodies of water interfere with our enjoyment of nature and the pride we take in our city. Studies say that people are more likely to further trash places where litter exists. Interestingly, research also shows that those who live in places where there is litter, have higher incidences of depression and anxiety.

It would be great if people did not litter at all and respected the community’s natural beauty and wildlife. To that end, the Claremont Anti-Litter Task Force is developing ways to prevent this discouraging behavior. In the meantime, we can keep our special places pleasant by joining this initiative in civic pride.

To adopt your special spot or a spot identified as a “hotspot” for litter, contact the Claremont Parks and Recreation Department at 603-542-7019 or at [email protected].
