Newmarket 2, Sunapee 1 in double overtime in Women’s Soccer
Sunapee lost a tough battle in Newmarket on Friday night in the second overtime of a back-and-forth game against the defending state champions. “I think they have a little more skill than our squad, but we made up for it with great hustle and effort, I am proud of the kids, it should be an interesting rematch in Sunapee at the end of the season,” said Sunapee coach Myles Cooney. The first half was a defensive battle, as both teams made adjustments to the new looks and additions from last season’s teams. Sunapee had the best chance to score in the first half on a bang bang play in front of the net on a corner kick, but Newmarket held on with a great play on the goal line.
In the second half, Newmarket open the scoring on a goal from a set piece from long range that just beat goalie Annaliesse Rowell, but Sunapee would answer back 10 minutes later with a goal credited to Brynn Smith off their own set piece from long distance which led to a scrum in front and a goal that just crossed the goal line.
The overtime had Sunapee carrying much of the play, but a solid transition by Newmarket produced a great chance from about 15 yards, and the Mules made the Lakers pay as Newmarket’s golden goal resulted in a 2-1 victory.
“These two teams are close. There are different styles of play, Newmarket benefited from being at home, they play on a smaller surface; I am excited for the rematch in 6 or 7 weeks at Alexander field. We learned a lot about our team today, I feel confident about our direction, and I am proud of their effort,” said Cooney.
