Sunapee’s Smith Scores 100th: Lakers Defeat Concord Christian Academy, 3-2

SUNAPEE — On a beautiful homecoming Saturday before a large crowd, the Sunapee Lakers Women’s Soccer team (8-2) found a way to hold on for a 3-2 victory versus a surging Concord Christian Academy team that would not back down. This was the Lakers’ fourth game in five days.

The run of play all day was pretty even, with both teams finding success and possession in the offensive third, but then again struggling to transition to offense from the defensive third. Per usual, Liz Tschudin was all over the field, and Brynn Smith and Clare Tuohy, would anchor an offense that found a way to net three goals: the first off, the foot of Tuohy on a beautiful feed from Smith, and the last two, in the second half, off penalty kicks from Brynn Smith.

Brynn Smith’s first Penalty kick was the 100th goal of her successful career in Laker green. “We will miss that engine and relentless pursuit of offense from Brynn next year, she is a great team player and one of the best goal scorers we have had at Sunapee,” said Sunapee Head Coach Myles Cooney

The Lakers were seemingly cruising to a 3-0 victory on Alexander Field, but CCA didn’t back down and scored twice in the final 15 minutes to narrow the deficit to 3-2. But the Lakers went back on the offensive and closed the game out with a couple of rallies and near misses, eventually settling for the 3-2 final score and much needed victory.

Annaliese Rowell had another strong showing at keeper with 12 saves, some of them of the grade A variety. Also noteworthy were strong efforts to anchor the defense from Brie Hughlock and Izzy Correa.

“It was a long week, we open next week with two games in a row (Monday and Tuesday), we need to tighten up our defense and work on our transitions, but there’s a lot of good parts too. Our division is looking pretty competitive, it should be an interesting tournament,” said Cooney after the game.
