CLAREMONT- On October 27, 2022, Claremont emergency services responded to a fatal motorcycle accident on Main Street. Aulay Fritz Carlson, 64, of Claremont, perished as a result of the accident, which took place just before 6pm on Thursday evening, according to a press release. The crash took place near Westside Avenue and the former Coca-Cola Bottling Plant on Main Street. Reportedly, Carlson’s motorcycle was the only vehicle involved.

First responders on the scene discovered Carlson to be unresponsive and despite their best efforts were tragically unable to resuscitate the motorcyclist. Circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation with the Claremont Police Department. At this time, detectives associated with the accident are investigating to determine if speed, impairment, distraction and/or a medical emergency contributed to the accident in any way. The Claremont Police Department wants to thank the Sullivan County’s Sheriff’s Office for assisting with the investigation.

Recent studies have shown that, with the increasing popularity of motorcycle riding, so too have accidents increased. In those same studies, it is typically shown that multi-vehicle collisions make up for the majority of fatalities when it comes to motorcycle riders. Commonly, failing to observe proper right-of-way laws are the most consistent reason for these accidents. In 2020, a New Hampshire study found that motorcycle rider fatalities contributed to 14 percent of all traffic fatalities.
