LTE: Tom Lowe’s “43rd Street” Returns

If you lived in the Greater Lake Sunapee Region during the ’70s and ‘80s, you no doubt remember seeing or hearing about the musical comedies presented by the Sutton Homesteaders. These 14 productions were written and directed by the late Tom Lowe from 1971-1984 and were staged at the Kearsarge Regional High School in North Sutton, NH. The productions raised thousands of dollars for the benefit of the South Sutton Meetinghouse and the New London Hospital as well as for the support of a scholarship fund awarded to graduates from KRHS pursuing the performing arts. The scholarship was named in Lowe’s honor and is managed by the NH Charitable Foundation.

43rd Street is the last production written by Lowe as he passed from a battle with cancer in 1985 at the age of 64. Each of his plays had a professional flair benefiting from his Vaudeville background and that of his brother Don. Tom had many talents. He wrote the script and the music, designed the sets and the costumes; he also directed and performed in each production. He had the cast in his head as he wrote the next play, knowing people well enough to cast them in a role that would make them shine and have fun! Susie Lowe-Stockwell, oldest daughter of Don Lowe, will direct this production. She and her sisters Kathy, Kim and Holly all performed in most of Lowe’s plays.

SKIT (Sunapee-Kearsarge Intercommunity Theater) is thrilled to partner with NOHA (Newport Opera House Association) for this production scheduled at the Newport Opera House on November 18th and 19th at 7:00pm and a Sunday matinee on Nov 20th at 2:00pm. 43rd Street is set during the Roaring Twenties and complete with flappers, bootleggers, gangsters and the flippant ladies and gentlemen of the press.
