VSP Investigates Suspicous Death

SPRINGFIELD, Vt., — The Vermont State Police is investigating the death of an inmate at the Southern State Correctional Facility.

Dan Griswold, 67, of Rutland, Vermont was found unresponsive, by the Department of Corrections staff at approximately 11:05 a.m. Tuesday October 25, 2022.

DOC staff provided emergency medical attention and responding EMS was unsuccessful.

Griswold was pronounced deceased at the facility at 11:30 a.m.

Detectives of Vermont Criminal Investigations of Troop B out of South Royalton, Vermont VSP Barracks was notified and responded to the facility to perform a death investigation.

There are no preliminary indications that the death was suspicious.

An autopsy at the Burlington chief medical examiner’s office was performed and cause of death is ongoing.

Griswold, in state custody since 1998 for aggravated sexual assault sentence of 40 years to life was scheduled to go before the parole board in 2025 on his minimum release date.

The investigation is being led by Detective Sergeant Dan Hall.
