Herbert N. Smith CONCORD, NH — On November 6, 2022, Herbert (Herb) N. Smith passed away peacefully in Concord, New Hampshire in the company of his two grandchildren. Born January 14, 1930, Herbert was raised with his three older siblings in Croydon, New Hampshire. He attended Towle High School in Newport where he was introduced to the first two loves of his life: his 1st wife, Marion, and sports. He played high school football and baseball and spoke fondly of his time spent in the hills and valleys along the Sugar River skiing and fishing. After high school, Herb attended the University of New Hampshire graduating with a degree in history, then joined the Marine Corps traveling from California to Connecticut cutting his teeth as a radioman. He spoke proudly of his time in the service, particularly time spent in DC as an honor guard during the Eisenhower inauguration parade. After being honorably discharged from service, and a brief stint in Connecticut, Herb and Marion moved back home to Marion’s family land in Newbury, NH where they built a house and began carving out a life for themselves in the shadow of Mount Sunapee. Soon after settling, Herbert and Marion’s two children, Allisen and Chandler, were born. Herb became a staple in the small town running and operating CHM Perkin’s & Son family store as postmaster, working winters at Mt. Sunapee on the fledgling ski patrol helping injured skiers at the relatively new state ski area. He was always quick to proffer a bit of dry wit and yankee sarcasm to whomever crossed his path. His love for sports never waned and he participated in local bowling and golf leagues over the years. He remained an avid gardener, for over half a century turning his beloved home into a veritable Garden of Eden, adding brush strokes of color from his and Marion’s vast cultivations and dotting their field with apple trees, creating an amazing natural playground for his grandchildren, Brianna and Jared, to explore as they grew. With a voracious work ethic, it didn’t matter to Herb whether he was having a good day, or one of those days the world seemed to be falling apart around him. You could always find him “puttering” to work on making something beautiful, or accomplishing a task that had to get done. After their retirement from the general store, Herb and Marion spent their extra time in the garden, with their grandkids, traveling, and golfing together until Marion’s passing in 2001. In 2006, Herb married Lucille “Lucy” Cote of Claremont. She joined Herb in Mt. Sunapee, where they resided until this past spring, leaving in winters to chase the green golf courses in Naples, Florida and enjoy the view right off the 1st tee. A devoted husband, he joined her at Pine Rock Manor when illness forced her away from their home this spring. In the months he was there, he continued to care for Lucy and make the staff smile with his brand of humor and Yankee style. Herbert was predeceased by his parents, Chester and Beatrice Smith, siblings, Erma, Maynard and Mary, his first wife, Marion and son, Chandler. He is survived by his wife, Lucy, his daughter, Allisen, his granddaughter, Brianna with her husband and four children, his grandson, Jared and his fiancee, and an extended family through marriage to Marion. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on November 19, 2022 at the Chandler Cemetery next to the land Herb loved in Newbury, NH. Military honors will be conducted by the US Marine Corps.
