CLAREMONT — The Cardinals men opened the season at home while the women’s squad took the ride to Jaffrey to face always tough Conant and ended up dropping both contests, 54-39 in the city, and 52-39 on the road.
Ray Curren’s men’s team just couldn’t find their groove and after trailing 28-21 at the half and couldn’t keep up with the athletic Orioles. Stevens twice cut the lead to only four points in the third quarter with free throws by Lucas Belisle and then with a hoop by Davante Thompson but that would be as close as the Cardinals would get.
Conant would close out the quarter with a flurry including a basket at the buzzer, then an 8-2 run to open the final quarter put things out of reach.
Hunter LaRocque led Stevens with 16 points while Mason Ferland chipped in with six points. Conant was led by sophomore Jared Nagle’s 20 and Manny Hodgson’s 14 points.
