SPRINGFIELD, VT – On April 7, the Vermont Department of Corrections (DOC) announced the initiation of an investigation into an allegation of misconduct at Southern State Correctional Facility (SSCF), 700 Charlestown Road.
Mike Lyon, SSCF superintendent, was placed on paid administrative leave while the Vermont Department of Human Resources conducts an independent investigation.
The Vermont Department of Human Resources began the investigation after a specific allegation of misconduct was submitted to DOC leadership.
SSCF Living Unit Supervisor Monique Sullivan will serve as acting superintendent until the investigation concludes, or until further notice.
Haley Sommer, communications director for DOC Communications and Legislative Affairs, said the length of the investigation is undetermined at this time.
“I cannot comment on where the complaint originated from as it’s an ongoing investigation,” Sommer said. “The Human Resources Department is required to investigate all complaints filed. Employees of the DOC are always put on leave until the investigation is completed.”
The alleged misconduct is not related to any deaths of incarcerated individuals at the facility.
“The Vermont Department of Corrections is committed to fully and thoroughly investigating all allegations of misconduct in our facilities, our field offices, and our central office,” stated Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Corrections Nicholas J. Deml in a press release.
“Often these investigations reveal areas for improvement, which support our effort to continuously better our system and live up to our values.”
