NEWPORT, NH (5/17/23) – Alzheimer’s Association Ride to End ALZ New England Executive Leadership Committee Member and endurance cyclist Andy Dunberg is taking up the challenge to cycle nonstop solo for 48 hours this Memorial Day Weekend to raise critical awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. Starting on May 27 at 7 a.m. at Newport High School, Dunberg will pedal through the day and night until May 29 at 7 a.m. In his pursuit, Dunberg, who resides in Grantham, New Hampshire, will cycle more than 600 miles while riding continuously for 48 hours to honor his father Murray and Aunt Francis who both passed away from Alzheimer’s disease.
“Alzheimer’s robs people of their memories, their ability to complete even the simplest tasks, and eventually, without exception, their lives, all the while putting a terrible strain on their families and caregivers,” said Dunberg. “I know this first hand because my father and aunt both passed away from Alzheimer’s disease and the pain of losing a loved one in such an awful way has motivated me for more than 25 years to help hurting families through my passion for endurance cycling. Words cannot describe the hurt when a beloved parent no longer recognizes their child or family.”
In addition to pushing physical and mental boundaries during this journey, Dunberg has a goal of raising $20,000 on behalf of the Ride to End ALZ New England. The Ride to End ALZ New England, now in its 27th year, is a fully supported, one-day fundraising event for all levels of riders, from casual cyclists to avid enthusiasts. Cyclists have the option to choose between 100, 62, or 30 miles, or a ride of their own in their community. With each mile conquered, participants fuel cutting-edge research targeted to change the trajectory of Alzheimer’s disease and all other dementias.
Ninety percent of the funds raised during the Ride to End ALZ are given to research restricted grants for Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The remaining ten percent of the proceeds support Alzheimer’s Association efforts to provide support and resources to local families impacted by the disease. Since its inception, the event has raised over $8.3 million to directly advance treatments and research toward the first survivor of Alzheimer’s.
