SUNAPEE — Behind a dominant performance from pitcher John Roth, the #2-seed Sunapee Lakers eased past the #15-seed Pittsfield Panthers 9-0 in first-round action of the Division IV baseball playoffs.
Under a blistering hot sun, Roth was cool as a cucumber, pitching a complete game shutout. The flame-thrower allowed zero walks and three hits, while striking out 15 Panthers on 92 pitches to get the win.
On the offensive end, Sunapee struck early grabbing two runs in the first-inning off two Pittsfield throwing errors and a passed ball. The Lakers would put a three-spot on the board in the bottom of the third behind an RBI double from Roth, and two fielder’s choices to push their lead to 5-0.
The bottom of the fifth- and sixth-innings saw Sunapee score off three passed balls, as well as the second of catcher Ian McNally’s two RBIs on the day to reach the final score of 9-0.
On the mound for Pittsfield, Casey Anderson went four and two-thirds innings, allowing eight on 106 pitches. He struck out seven Lakers and walked six.
With the loss, Pittsfield ends their season with a record of 7-12. Sunapee advances with the victory and will host #7-seed Colebrook on Saturday, June 3, at 4 p.m.
