NEW LONDON — Superintendent Winfried Feneberg is pleased to announce Kearsarge Regional High School’s June Student of the Month.

Mason Russell, a senior from Warner, was selected for the honor based on nominations from school staff and faculty. Russell is described as a leader and mentor to his fellow peers.

“Mason is an incredible member of the KRHS community. Whenever we are looking for assistance, whether it is with students or adults, Mason goes above and beyond to help out and never asks for recognition,” said School Counselor Rebecca Schrader. “Mason has been an asset to his peers, providing tutoring services in multiple subject areas and we have witnessed him have a lasting positive impact on KRHS students needing some extra peer support. Mason is always a smiling face making KRHS a better place!”

Students of the Month are selected by Kearsarge faculty from a pool of nominated students. This honor is in recognition of the student’s positive conduct and character, both on and off campus, and is an acknowledgment of an individual’s positive moral, character, and their contributions to the school community.

Russell is a member of the KRHS swim team and is captain of the lacrosse team. He has been a member of the Student Council for four years and achieved the role of vice president senior year.

Additionally, Russell tutors fellow classmates, and is a Physical Science Teaching Assistant for Science Teacher Lindsay Herlihy’s ninth grade class.

“I do not have adequate words to express how wonderful it has been to have Mason’s help in my classroom,” said Herlihy. “He immediately built strong, supportive connections with underclass members; he is an invaluable resource in the lab, helping students and promoting lab-safe behavior; he has incredible natural teaching instincts that help make learning more fun and approachable for the freshman class. It is so commendable that a high school senior would willingly give up early dismissal to help out in a science classroom and have fun doing it!”

Outside of school, Russell is a volunteer coach for Upper Valley Aquatic Center and works as a sous chef at The Kitchen in Warner.

Following graduation from Kearsarge, Russell plans to attend the University of New Hampshire (UNH) and major in Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology.

“I am interested in a career dealing with Pathology, studying dealing with infectious diseases,” said Russell. “I would like to possibly end up working with the United Nations, the Red Cross, or some other NGO that confronts the outbreak of epidemic and pandemic conditions. Essentially, I want to be part of the efforts to protect vulnerable people from infectious diseases, using my understanding of science to help people have better lives.”
