Cheshire Historian Wins National Award

Eagle Times Staff
Alan Rumrill has spent the last 40 years preserving the history of Cheshire County. A national organization now wants everyone to know that he is also an important part of it.

The American Association for State and Local History is honoring Rumrill with its Award of Excellence for Individual Achievement.

Forty years ago, Rumrill became the Historical Society of Cheshire County’s first paid employee, a previously all-volunteer organization that served the city of Keene and 22 other towns in southwest New Hampshire. Since then, under Rumrill’s stewardship, the Historical Society has grown to have six staff members, 130 volunteers and three buildings.

He has written eight books and several articles and book chapters on regional history. His latest book, published in April, is “Monadnock Originals, Colorful Characters from New Hampshire’s Quiet Corner.” He has also written and recorded 1,500 Monadnock Moment radio spots over the years at WKBK radio in Keene.

The Historical Society of Cheshire County is the only countywide historical society in New Hampshire. Formed in 1927, the society produces more than 150 programs annually such as exhibits, presentations, guided tours, summer camps, films, festivals, and teacher workshops. The society serves as a contemporary hub for people to connect through history, art, culture, and the environment through their own lens and personal experience.

The Award of Excellence for Individual Achievement is part of the association’s Leadership in History Awards, the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation of state and local history. This year, the national association conferred 53 national awards honoring people, projects, exhibits and publications representing the best in the field and for those who provide leadership for the future of state and local history.
