Construction Continues on I-91 Bridge in Westminster, Vt.

Eagle Times Staff
Work is continuing on the Interstate 91 bridge over the Saxtons River.

Motorists on Route 121 should be prepared to stop as the road passes under the twin spans in Westminster, advises the Vermont Transportation Agency.

On the interstate, southbound traffic is being diverted into the northbound lanes. Northbound traffic is limited to the right-hand lane of travel.

The speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph within the project area on I-91. Fines are doubled for speeding within the construction zone, the agency warns.

This week, according to the agency, crews will be installing expansion joints at Piers 3 and 5. Expansion joints allow for expansion and contraction of the bridge deck due to temperature variations as well as movement created by traffic.

Elsewhere on the site, carpentry crews will continue forming the overhangs, link slabs and curtain walls. The link slabs connect the bridge deck sections together.

Also, as part of the deck replacement project, subcontractors will continue the installation of stay-in-place forms and shear studs throughout the structure. Shear studs are metal rods that connect the concrete deck to the metal beams.

The project is expected to be completed in Fall 2024.
