Musicians, Dancers to Delight Children Tuesday

By Eagle Times Staff
The Springfield Community Band and The Dance Factory are bringing the classic symphonic fairy tale “Peter and the Wolf,” to Springfield’s children.

Nick Pelton will conduct the performance, with choreography by Ashley Hensel-Browning, at 7 p.m. Tuesday on The Common, across from the cemetery on Cherry Hill.

The production of Sergei Prokofiev’s tale, in which a young boy catches a wolf and takes it to the zoo — it is a children’s symphony — features themes for each character performed by a different instrument.

In a prepared statement, the Community Band promises a night for frivolity and urges everyone, kids and adults, to come dressed in their pajamas and be ready for fun.

Kids will get a chance to dance the Hokey Pokey and conduct the band.

Free ice cream will be served and attendees are urged to bring a chair. Jazz Concert

A medley of songs in tribute to Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, “A Night in Tunisia” by John “Dizzy” Gillespie and a music by Henry Mancini including “The Pink Panther” and “Peter Gunn” will be performed at 7:30 p.m., July 18, at the Hartness House, 109 Front Street (formerly 30 Orchard Street) in Springfield.

The band’s Jazz Combo and percussionist Clay Thompson will be featured. Thompson will demonstrate his mastery of his craft in the often explosive “Concerto for Drumset,” composed by Larry Neeck.
