In Cheshire County, New Hampshire, rains caused problems in Swanzey and Winchester, but both faired better than towns in southern Vermont.
Swanzey Fire Chief Gould said it was a mixed bag of missions Monday and Tuesday.
Some roads, he said, were “obliterated”
“We had heavy damage to some roads, but in some parts of town, other residents don’t even really know what’s going on,” said Gould. “The damage was mostly concentrated in the Swanzey Lake area with Temple Hill and Anson Hill roads sustaining severe damage.”
The Public Works and Transportation departments were working to repair roads in Swanzey on Tuesday.
Contractors will be bringing in materials so the raods are at least passable to emergency services, Gould said.
At Pilgrim Pines, the Fire Department assisted with “an orderly evacuation,” Gould said. The religious retreat had double occupancy because exiting guests became stranded on the cusp of check-out.
“They had their coming week people coming in for their check-ins and then the other people were on the departure day so they ended up with the double amount of occupancy that they would normally have,” Gould said.
The town of Winchester was unable to comment at press time.
