WEATHERSFIELD, Vt. — A stolen excavator smashed through a wall early Sunday morning and was used to steal an ATM from the Jiffy Mart at Downers Four Corners in Weathersfield.
Emily Chase, Jiffy Mart’s assistant store manager, said an employee arrived to open the store and found the front door torn off and notified the Vermont State Police. The store’s crew worked to build a temporary wall so they could reopen as quickly as possible.
State Trooper Joseph Galusha investigated, learning the thief used the orange Kubota excavator to remove the front wall, hoist the ATM and take it to Upper Falls Road, where the cash machine was loaded into the back of a vehicle and the excavator was abandoned.
“They basically drove up to the window right next to the main door, where the ATM is, and crashed through it with the bucket of the excavator, knocked over our ice cream display and our Beanie Baby display,” Chase said.
“They then maneuvered the excavator to rip the ATM up out of the ground and rip it out of the window, taking down all the siding, and left with it.
Chase said the store reopened after the makeshift wall was built.
Anyone with information on the above matter is asked to call Galusha at the Vermont State Police, Westminster Barracks at 802-722-4600.
