Concord, NH – Gov. Chris Sununu is on the nation’s border in Texas to meet with New Hampshire National Guard soldiers who have been deployed to assist efforts along the southern border.
“The crisis at the southern border affects all 50 states, and it’s important to get an on-the-ground look and hear directly from stakeholders,” said Sununu. “I look forward to meeting with New Hampshire National Guard soldiers who have bravely deployed to help keep our nation safe to thank them on behalf of the entire state of New Hampshire for their dedicated service.”
This morning, Sununu will meet with 45 New Hampshire National Guard soldiers who are with the 941st Military Police Battalion McAllen, Texas. He will be briefed about their area of operations from the Battalion Commander.
The 941st Military Police Battalion was formed in 2019. It helped with the state’s COVID-19 response, aided the Department of Corrections, responds to civilian disturbances and led the Joint Task Force Winter surge responding to the state’s need for hospital support. The border deployment is it’s first outside of the state.
From there, the governor will tour some of the Brownsville Border Patrol Station’s Remote Video Surveillance Sites that are operated by New Hampshire’s soldiers. He will also be briefed on Border Operations by Border Patrol.
This afternoon, he will with Texas Department of Safety officials and he will take an Air Patrol Tour of the Rio Grande River.
On Friday Morning, Sununu will meet with more than 60 New Hampshire National Guard soldiers who are part of the 237th Military Police Company in Harlingen, Texas. He will return to New Hampshire on Friday evening.
The 237th Military Police Company was formed in 2007 and is based in Pembroke. Of it’s 170 soldiers, 125 have been deployed to the border in Texas. The unit provided annual training to the NH State Police and was mobilized during the 2008 ice storm, during the 2020 civil disturbances and the 2021 Presidential Inauguration. It has also been mobilized multiple times in support of the state Corrections Department.
