Escaped N.H. Inmate Killed By Miami Police

CONCORD, N.H. — An escaped New Hampshire inmate has died after being shot by Miami Beach, Fla., police during a hostage situation at a Victoria’s Secret.

Darien Young, 29, was suspected of shoplifting when he took a mother and daughter hostage at knifepoint, according to media reports.

Responding Miami Beach Police Department officers immediately responded to the open-air mall and an officer shot Young, police said. Young died at the trauma center at Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital, police said.

The two victims were unharmed, according to police and media reports.

Young, a minimum-security inmate, was placed on escape status on July 21, after he left the grounds of the Calumet House transitional housing unit and failed to return.

Young’s next of kin have been notified. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the incident.

Young was incarcerated for receiving stolen property, controlled drug acts prohibited, burglary and falsifying physical evidence, with a minimum parole eligibility date of July 31, and a maximum release date of Jan. 31, 2028.
