National Night Out, initiated in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch, has since grown into a prominent nationwide event. Locally, police departments in Claremont, Lebanon and Chester, Vt., will be participating this year.

Traditionally held on the first Tuesday of August, the event seeks to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and demonstrate support for local anti-crime efforts

The first National Night Out involved 2.5 million neighbors across 400 communities in 23 states, according to associations website.

This year’s list of participants stretches across 17,000 plus communities, with 43 cities in New Hampshire and Vermont participating.

Area law enforcement agencies promote the night to bridge the gap between officers and the communities they serve. Residents can interact with police officers in a relaxed and friendly environment, gaining insights into the challenges faced by law enforcement while also fostering a sense of trust and understanding.

The Claremont Police Department announced its event on its Facebook page. The posting showed the event will have free food, fun activities and safety information available. The celebration will be on Pleasant Street from 5 to 9 tonight.

In Claremont, there will be a small carnival with games, music and prizes as well as a touch-a-truck event.

Chester is also hosting its event from 6 to 9 tonight.1, at the Public Safety Building. The event is open to all community services. The police and fire departments and the ambulance squad will be doing demonstrations and teaching lifesaving skills.

Chester will also have the Weathersfield, Vt., Police K-9, AJ, on site with his handler, Detective Ryan Prince, doing demonstrations.

Lebanon’s event will be in Colburn Park from 5 to 8 tonight.
