Newport Displays Another Mural on Sunapee Street

NEWPORT — The Newport Library Arts Center has added a second mural to downtown Newport, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce. During the next five years, the two associations plan to add a multitude of murals to the Newport Historic District (NHD) in an effort to “help shape the downtown area,” by adding more color and community spirit through art.

Heidi Lorenz, who was the head of production for the Heritage Mural recently added to Newport’s historic district, was the artist behind the new mural by the fire station on Sunapee Street. Library Art’s Center Director Kate Luppold said they chose this location because it’s highly visible to those driving into Newport.

Unlike the Heritage Mural, which involved the community in its creation, the new mural was painted by Lorenz, who is from Goshen and is the Community Arts Engagement Coordinator at the Library Art’s Center. The center’s Marketing Director, Fran Huott, contributed to the mural’s design.

The mural itself is meant to represent the things “that make Newport a nice place to call home”, Luppold stated. She added that the murals pull inspiration from vintage aesthetics, since they are in the NHD. The Sunapee Street Mural displays a postcard design, including the Corbin Covered Bridge, Richards Free Library, ice skating on the town common and more.

At Newport’s ever popular Apple Pie Craft’s Fair this August, the Library Arts Center will be asking the community “what they are most proud of” in Newport, to start collecting ideas for their next project.

All funding for these murals is coming from Library Arts Center donations, including business grants.
