Leon R. Hobbs CLAREMONT, NH -Leon R. Hobbs, Jr., 74, passed away on Tuesday, August 1st at his home. He was born on November 15, 1948 in Woodsville, NH. Lee grew up in East Ryegate, VT with his brother, Joe. A graduate from Wells River High School, Lee became a master electrician, working at the Bemis Paper Mill and Claremont Paper Mill in East Ryegate, before moving to Claremont with his wife and sons to continue his work at the Claremont Paper Mill, which is now the APC Paper Mill. He worked as the mill’s head electrician for many years, and retired from the paper mill in 2017. He will be remembered for his kind and generous heart. A volunteer fireman in Woodsville, Lee also supported the Claremont community, providing electrical expertise at the Arrowhead Ski Area in the ‘80s and the Claremont Seniors’ Center. Lee was a volunteer ski mechanic at Arrowhead for the last fifteen years, and served as treasurer on the Arrowhead board this past year. When his sons were young, he coached Little League and was a parent volunteer with the Indian Guides. Lee was a man of few words, high wit, and was always reliable, caring, and loving. Lee loved to bike and was involved in multiple charity bike rides. He participated in the Prouty, supporting the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, for over twenty years. As he continued to enjoy biking, he found other ways to participate in the biking community, including riding across Iowa with the RAGBRAI bike ride since 2005. In addition to biking, he enjoyed playing cards, making puzzles, and dry humor. Lee is survived by his wife of fifty years, Beatrice Fillian, their dog, Sandi, his brother, Joseph (Donna), and his two sons, Allan and Edward (Alyson). He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Tara, Keisha, Hannah, Claire, and Ethan. Calling hours will be held at Stringer Funeral Home at 146 Broad St, Claremont, NH, on Thursday, August 10th from 5-7 pm. A private burial will be held at the Union Cemetery in Claremont, NH. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Prouty, the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, or to the Sullivan County Humane Society.
