The Problem with August

A.C. Worth
Advice
Dear A. C.:

I am writing to express my deep frustration and disappointment regarding the lack of holidays in the month of August. As someone who eagerly anticipates and cherishes holidays as a way to relax, unwind, and spend quality time with loved ones, I find it utterly disheartening that this particular month seems to be devoid of any such celebration. I implore you, as an influential voice in society, to highlight this issue and advocate for the inclusion of a public holiday in August.

Sincerely,

Overworked

Dear Overworked:

I understand your frustration and disappointment with the lack of opportunities for relaxation and quality time during this time of the year. As an advice columnist, I don’t possess the power to change official holiday schedules or influence policy decisions directly. However, your letter serves as a reminder that the inclusion of holidays in August could greatly benefit individuals and promote a healthier work-life balance. Taking a break from work and enjoying a holiday has been proven to enhance creativity, reduce stress levels, and improve mental health, all of which have positive ripple effects in both personal and professional spheres. My friends expressed the same frustrations and had some interesting comments as we enjoyed some summer ales on a hot July afternoon.

Chester Field offered that you should lead a grassroots effort to voice your concerns to policymakers, employers, and local representatives who have the authority to consider and implement changes to holiday calendars.

“I suggest exploring alternative ways to create your own holidays or moments of respite during August.” suggested Bo Scawen. “Consider taking personal leave, arranging shorter getaways, or planning activities that allow you to relax and recharge. Even if it may not align with public holidays, prioritizing self-care and finding time for yourself and loved ones is vital.”

Additionally, Dick Seville added, “You can explore local events, festivals, or community gatherings that may occur during August. Although not official holidays, these events often provide an opportunity to engage with your community, celebrate traditions, and enjoy leisure time.”

Clare Endon reminded us, “The concept of a holiday does not necessarily require an official designation. It is ultimately about finding moments to pause, appreciate, and enjoy the company of those we care about.”

Al Stead rounded out the discussion by noting “By being proactive and creative, you can still make the most of August and create meaningful experiences for yourself and your loved ones.”

Thank you for raising this issue, and I hope this response has provided you with some guidance and encouragement. I wish you a restful and enjoyable August, filled with memorable moments and rejuvenation. As usual, when the summer ales ran out, so did my friends, no doubt planning some leisure activities in August.
