CONCORD, N.H. — Investigator Michael Keane and K-9 Summit are the newest members of the New Hampshire Department of Corrections’s K-9 Investigations Unit. Keane and Summit are based out of New Hampshire State Prison for Men in Concord.

Summit is a one-year-old black lab, who, along with Keane, will undergo ten weeks of training with the K-9 Investigations Unit. Following their training, the team will receive their annual certification through the United States Police Canine Association.

The New Hampshire Department of Corrections’ Investigation Bureau is part of the Division of Professional Standards. The Bureau consists of two separate sections, the South Unit based at the New Hampshire State Prison for Men in Concord, and the North Unit based at the Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility in Berlin. The South Unit provides investigation services for the New Hampshire State Prison for Men, the New Hampshire Correctional Facility for Women and all of the department’s Transitional Housing Units. The North Unit provides cross unit support for the whole bureau. Investigative services are provided when criminal conduct has occurred or is suspected, including but not limited to, investigations into assaults, introduction of contraband, and escapes. The Bureau also performs internal affairs investigations when necessary.

The Investigations Bureau uses K-9 teams in their work to help prevent the introduction of contraband into the department’s facilities. Summit joins K-9s Oakley, Bonny and Ryker as the fourth K-9 in the unit. Each K-9 is certified in building searches, motor vehicle searches, outdoor open area searches, baggage, parcel and mail searches, and people searches. The K-9s are certified, imprinted and trained to detect suboxone (Buprenorphine), cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana, cell phones and firearms.
