Stevens Cardinals varsity soccer team traveled to Monadnock Regional High School on a rainy Friday night to take on the Huskies on opening night. The Cardinals came away with a 5-0 victory.
Junior striker Connor Miller found the back of the net twice on assists from seniors Landon Norton-Avery and Mason Ferland to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead as they headed to halftime.
In the second half, the Cardinals put in three more goals. Senior Matt Wilmot scored on a corner kick that sophomore Logan Minckler served in. Minckler also added a goal of his own. Freshman Jaxon Churchill finished the scoring with a penalty kick.
Junior Nevin Marsh and sophomore Devin Boehle shared the goalie duties as each played a half in goal with each saving two shots apiece.
Cardinals head coach Jason Stone was happy to get the win with the limited conditions due to the rain.
“We weren’t as good as we were hoping to be but because of the rain, we ended up playing on a small middle school field so the spacing was very limited.” Stone said. “We had a hard time putting the ball into spaces that we wanted to but we’re happy to get a win in the first game of the season with no one getting hurt.”
Stevens (1-0) will host Kearsarge (1-0) today at Monadnock Park at 6:30 p.m.
