The Cardinals flipped the switch in their second game of the young season with a 1-0 win over rivals the Kearsarge Cougars Tuesday night. With more than five years since Stevens High School scored a victory over the Cougars since the 2017 season, it was a tense night.

Cardinal senior Luke Belisle, a team captain, scored the match’s only goal on a line drive into the corner of the Kearsarge net on a free kick in the first half. Both teams played a scoreless second half as Stevens defended a lot to maintain their lead.

Cardinal junior Nevin Marsh was strong in goal as he secured his first solo shutout of the season.

“It was an impressive and encouraging win for us tonight against Kearsarge,” said Jason Stone, Steven’s head coach. “They’ve had our number for years now, so it’s nice to come out of the area with a win against a good team.

“We stayed pretty well organized to make it very difficult for Kearsarge to break us down for a scoring opportunity to get an exciting win as well as an exciting start to the season.”

The players put in work.

“It took a lot of sweat and hard work but by working as a team and working through an injury to one of our captains, we got the job done,” said Pat Prive, junior.

Stevens (2-0) plays their third road game in their first three games of the season Saturday when they travel to play Fall Mountain (1-0) at 5 p.m.
