Sunapee Girl’s Soccer Team Shuts Out Hinsdale 4-0 in Season Opener

Eagle Times Staff
It took just 18 minutes for Sunapee Middle High School’s girls’ soccer team to find its footing in its season opener Thursday night against Hinsdale.

The breakthrough came with an unassisted goal from Clare Tuohy. Prior to that, the Lakers traded possession and showed some room for improvement as they worked to make up for the loss of senior center midfielder Izzy Correa for the season, said Sunapee Head Coach Myles Cooney.

“We lost Izzy in the preseason to an injury, and most of this early season will be about learning to play through different players,” said Cooney. “Izzy offered so much on the field as a ball winner and distributor, and as a leader. There will be a learning curve without her on the pitch, but she is on the bench chipping in where she can. She is a competitor and so are the Lakers.”

In the second half, the Lakers returned to form despite two unassisted goals from Sunapee’s Sophie Bourque and Anya Fillipov. The scoring was “capped off by a nice give-and-go goal” from Clare Tuohy with an assist from Hannah Laflamme, said Cooney, who pointed out the key saves from senior Annaliese Rowell. The athlete was crediting with really helping “the Lakers keep their confidence.”

“We had 27 shots tonight, only 17 found the frame,” Cooney said. “We struggled a bit with our defensive rotation and touch, but the play left us a lot to work with. It’s a solid start, particularly with some of the hurdles we have had to hit in the preseason.”

The Lakers returned to action Wednesday versus Mascoma. Details of the game were not available at press time.
