CLAREMONT, N.H. — The blood drive honoring leukemia survivor and Stevens High School alumna Jaidyn Harlow culminated Tuesday as area residents donated blood collected by the American Red Cross at the Claremont Senior Center.

Harlow’s medical challenges began as a school band member four years ago after collapsing during a football game and needing a lifesaving blood transfusion within an hour.

Blood drive organizer Michael Huse said 55 people came to the Senior Center on Monday and donated a total of 45 pints.

“We had a lot of familiar faces, a lot of Jaidyn’s classmates and former schoolteachers,” said Huse. “Everyone who came in is a hero.”

Huse said people who were disqualified on Monday due to things like high iron levels or blood pressure returned on Tuesday to donate blood.

“It’s a win-win all around,” he said. “This year, we’re celebrating one year of being cancer-free for this young girl, and I’m excited to advocate for the family again.”

Mayor Dale Girard was proud to donate blood and support Harlow.

“Mr. Huse came in to see me about a month ago about the blood draw,” said Girard, who explained that the City Council announced the event. “I feel it’s the right thing to do; get out and support events like this.”

Girard owns Golden Cross Ambulance in Claremont, which transported Jaidyn after she collapsed. It’s why he got into medical transport, he said.

“To hear a positive outcome like hers is heartwarming,” he said. “There are so many days that things don’t go as well as we’d hope, so when you get the opportunity to have a good positive outcome like this, it makes you feel good.”

Huse said anyone can donate blood to honor Harlow anytime. Once a month, the American Red Cross holds a blood drive at the Claremont Senior Center and Valley Regional Hospital.

Girard sees area residents and family members and knows they support the effort.

“I’d love to see more people get out and support events like this,” he said.
