Students of Newport Mixed Martial Arts including 3 adults aged 30-40 and 5 kids aged 6-14 competed in the Grappling Industries Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) competed last Saturday, August 26, at the New England Sports Complex in Derry, New Hampshire. The team brought home one Gold Medal, 3 Silver Medals, and one Bronze Medal.
The competition, which had over 630 competitors from all over the Northeast and Canada, is one of the largest that regularly occurs in New Hampshire taking place four to five times each year.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, for those who don’t know, is a one-on-one combat sport in which the competitors try to win by submitting their opponent using joint locks and chokes. It is one of the most effective and commonly used martial arts in mixed martial arts (or MMA) competitions like the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which looks like and has indeed borrowed some techniques from wrestling, is one of the most popular combat sports in the world.
At Newport Mixed Martial Arts, you can learn BJJ starting at age four. Students have the option of training both in the gi (traditional martial arts uniform) or no gi, in which you usually wear athletic shorts and a rash guard or compression shirt. For some, the ability to train in “normal” clothing is an attractive feature of BJJ, especially for those wanting to learn it as a form of self-defense since the “t-shirt and shorts” type attire so closely resembles day-to-day wear.
