SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — In a brazen act of violence, a 28-year-old detainee at Southern State Correctional Facility (SSCF) assaulted a nurse during a medication administration procedure, leading to a swift intervention by correctional officers and an ongoing investigation by the Vermont State Police.
On the morning of Thursday, Aug. 24, Cory Munger forcibly grabbed a nurse and wrapped his arm around her throat while holding a pen to her neck. The nurse, whose identity has not been disclosed, is employed by health provider Wellpath and was administering medication to Munger.
They were immediately rushed for a medical evaluation at Springfield Hospital following the harrowing ordeal.
According to official reports, Vermont State Police were promptly informed of the critical incident, adhering to the Department of Correction’s established protocols. As a result, a thorough investigation has been launched and a review will be held in accordance with its critical incident policy.
The Department of Corrections Peer Support team has been deployed onsite, offering assistance and counseling to both facility staff and Wellpath personnel affected by the traumatic event.
Munger, who is being held without bail at SSCF in relation to multiple robberies in Brattleboro on Aug. 20, was lodged at the facility on Aug. 22, 2023, on multiple charges, including assault and robbery with a weapon, vehicle operation with reckless or gross negligence, and violating an abuse prevention order.
Vermont State Police declined to comment on the ongoing investigation and had nothing to add to the previously released statement from the Department of Corrections.
