Sunapee Girls Soccer 2-0 on the Young Season

Eagle Times Staff
In a game that mirrored Tuesday’s game versus Hinsdale, Sunapee showed strong moments of possession and purpose, and slumped at times with sloppy touches and turnovers. As a result, they squeaked by with a 2-1 victory versus Mascoma in a game in which they held most of the possessions and fired off 24 shots (14 on frame).

Olive Jennings took a ball in the opening minute of the game, streaked down the sideline and scored in the first minute of the game unassisted. Sunapee would threaten for a majority of the first half with Mascoma countering off strong play from Emily Seiler; but finally, the Lakers scored off the head of Sophie Bourque on a corner kick from Clare Tuohy to close out the half.

Once again it should be noted that Annaliese Rowell made a couple difficult key saves to keep the Lakers’ confidence afloat in the first half of the game.

The second half saw Sunapee on the attack missing many grade A chances before Mascoma made them pay with a well struck ball late in the second half. The Royals would rally late but fall short in the closing minutes of the game.

“Well, the good news is we won a couple of games at home, again learning to play without our center midfielder Izzy Correa, but we walked away with a lot of information and lessons in hand.” Said Sunapee head coach Myles Cooney. “It’s what we do with those lessons over the long weekend as we gear up for two games next week that will say a lot about who we want to be.”

“In my mind we can work harder, play cleaner, and have more purpose, but you can’t be better than 2-0, so we’ll take it and get back to work tomorrow.”

Sunapee (2-0) hosts Epping (0-2) Monday at 4 p.m.
