Sunapee Girls Soccer Off to a Hot Start

Special To The Eagle Times
On a very warm afternoon, Sunapee laced up the cleats versus Epping on Alexander Field on Tuesday and walked away with a 6-0 victory, but the scoreboard didn’t tell the whole story.

Once again, Annaliese Rowell made key saves early and the defense held on, as the Blue Devils pressed hard in the first 15 minutes and then started to fade in the afternoon heat that saw Sunapee sub routinely, find their footing and then find the back of the net to close out the game with a convincing victory.

“There is no doubt our depth helped us tonight. Their early pressure showed Epping will be a team to contend with regardless of the score today. We left the game happy to win, but not satisfied with our play,” said Sunapee Girl’s Head Coach Myles Cooney

Clare Tuohy scored on an unassisted goal with 11 minutes left into the first half and soon after Amelia Slack would take a Tuohy pass in the closing minutes of the half and score to put the Lakers in front 2-0 at the half.

Once again, Epping pressed to open the second half, but Touhy scored another unassisted goal on a strong dribble to goal and soon after the flood gates opened. Sunapee scored three goals (Hannah Laflamme from Clare Tuohy, Sophie Bourque from Lil Kelleher, and Clare Tuohy unassisted) to close out an up and down game that saw the Lakers start their season 3-0.

“We are learning important lessons and managing to find wins,” Cooney said. “Our largest test of the year is Friday at Newmarket. I hope the kids are up for the challenge.”
