Edith L. Stillson

Edith L. Stillson ASCUTNEY, VT -Edith L. Stillson, 89, our beloved strong, independent, loving, caring, and generous wife, mother, gram, and great gram passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023, with her family by her side. She was born on May 31, 1934, in Williamstown, VT to H. Arthur and Edith (White) Smead and was married to Clarence “Beeb” Stillson on September 1, 1956. Together, they shared five decades as the loving and supportive foundation for their family in Ascutney. Raising their children beside the Ascutney fire station Edith demonstrated to her children that they could do anything, serving proudly as a firefighter and auxiliary member and always staying aware of the needs of their community through the emergency scanner. She loved to be around people and to be useful volunteering as an in-home caregiver for many, a trustee for Martin Memorial Hall, a member of the Veterans Memorial Committee, delivered Meals on Wheels, and was a recipient of the annual Town of Weathersfield Service Award. As a person who liked to stay on the move, she loved to “take hikes and rides” daily to keep up with local goings on with her friends, family, and neighbors. In her later years when she was unable to get out as much on her own, she cherished the time that friends and family would extend to her so she could continue to be a part of things. Edith was an amazing and talented cook, often canning and freezing the bounty from her vast vegetable garden to prepare delicious meals and pies throughout the year, no matter the weather. Her raspberry pie wasn’t to be missed, and each Thanksgiving she would bake almost a dozen pies to ensure a full dessert table. She loved flowers, always having multiple beautiful flower gardens. She is survived by four children Diana Stillson of Ascutney, John Stillson of Ascutney, Lisa Slade and husband Jeff of Ascutney, and Anita Dole and husband Martin of Hartland, VT; three siblings Elwin Smead and wife Norma of Weathersfield, VT, Richard Smead and Shirley McNutts-Greenwood of Weathersfield, and Jane Kidder of Ascutney; sister-in-law Prudence Russell of Ascutney; grandchildren Daryl (Echo), Jessica (Shawn), Tim (Jackie), Spencer (Elizabeth), and Brandon; great grandchildren Kinley, Abigail, and Benjamin; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence “Beeb” Stillson, and one brother, Harold Smead. A funeral service will be held at 10am on Saturday, September 16th, 2023, at the Ascutney Union Church with burial to follow in the Ascutneyville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers or financial contributions, her family asks you to give with your heart: volunteer, help someone in your community, or stop and enjoy the flowers. Knight Funeral Home of Windsor, VT is entrusted with arrangements and online condolences are appreciated at www.knightfuneralhomes.com
