SUNAPEE, NH — The Sunapee Lakers girls volleyball team won an exciting five set home opener on Sept. 6 against Moultonborough Academy.
Sunapee won the first set (25-21) before Moultonborough evened things up in the second set with the same score. The Lakers reclaimed the lead with a 25-22 win in the third set, but Moultonborough forced a fifth set after winning the fourth set by a score of 25-4.
In the final set, Sunapee bested Moultonborough, 15-11, to earn their first victory of the season.
“We battled Moultonborough in the first three sets and the last set. We did an excellent job of passing the ball and getting the sets up for our hitters,” said Sunapee Head Coach Corinne Levasseur. “We were solid on the serving line, as well.”
Some highlights for the Lakers included 21 successful serves and 10 aces from Addy Pifer, 18 successful attacks and 10 kills from Katelyn Claus and 12 successful attacks and 8 kills from Emma Reed.
“Riley Parenteau and Grace Cox shared the setting responsibilities, and both consistently put the ball up for our hitters,” Levasseur said. “Taylor Goodspeed and Lily Knapp rounded out the lineup with solid play in both the front and back lines, respectively.”
In Sunapee’s next match on Sept. 11, they squared-off against another team pursuing its second win of the season.
The Lakers traveled to Epping and once again, they went to a fifth set. Unfortunately for Sunapee, they came up short in the final set.
“Riley Parenteau and Grace Cox worked hard to set the ball; however, our hitters did not execute the kills needed to win the match,” Levasseur said.
On Sept. 13, Sunapee traveled to Inter-Lakes to face the number one seed in Division 3. Inter-Lakes demonstrated their skill by defeating Sunapee in three sets.
Sunapee is now 1-3 on the season. The next five matches for the Lakers are scheduled to take place in front of their home crowd at Sherburne Gymnasium. Sunapee will look to capitalize on their upcoming homestand as their opponents have a combined record of 3-12.
