CHESTER, VT — Despite losing twelve players to graduation, numbers are strong for the girls soccer team at Green Mountain with 25 players in the program. Green Mountain also returns several upperclassmen, including junior defender Autumn Fales, who earned All-State and All-Southern Vermont League (SVL) honors last season, and senior forward Abby Williams who joined Fales on the All-SVL team.
Other key contributors for Green Mountain include junior forwards Lexi Martin and Lindsey Miles, and a trio of defenders with senior Grace Wright, junior Kyra Burbela and sophomore Sophia Cherubini. There’s limited varsity experience this season, though, because of waiting behind last year’s large senior class.
One major void Green Mountain will need to fill this season is the loss of goalie Luna Burkland. Three players are currently in the running to receive playing time in the net.
Another major loss is Riley Paul, who earned All-State and All-SVL honors last season.
“I want to see us work together as a team to score goals. I would also like to see us make a playoff run,” said Carolynn Hamilton, head coach. “We are looking to improve our depth by having our players learn a variety of positions.”
Green Mountain competes against several strong programs in the SVL C Division including Bellows Falls, Springfield, Windsor, White River Valley, Rivendell, Randolph and Leland & Gray. Windsor eliminated Green Mountain in the opening round of last season’s playoffs by a 3-2 score. Green Mountain will have two chances to return the favor this season when they travel to Windsor on Thursday, Sept. 21, and they host the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
Another league opponent Green Mountain likely has circled on their calendar is the defending Division 4 state champions, Leland & Gray. Leland & Gray defeated Green Mountain 2-0 in the opening round of last year’s tournament before beating Proctor in the championship.
Green Mountain opened its season at Fair Haven on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
