Windsor Identifies ‘Black and Green Stuff’ Growing on School

WINDSOR, VT — Questions about a substance growing on the outside of the Windsor building within the Windsor Southeast Supervisory Union have been answered, and a resolution is being sought.

The building is not covered with mold but lichen (a plantlike organism), which makes it an aesthetic, not a health issue.

Building and Grounds Supervisor Jim Taft said he brought companies in to investigate the “black and green stuff.”

“It’s a moss that grows in damp, warm places that produces clean air,” he said. “The important thing is for us to be cognizant of it.”

He also called a masonry company as the lichen is growing on bricks which had received a chemical treatment to prevent things from growing on them. But a previous attempt at pressure-washing a wall near the theater resulted in holes forming, something he’s looking to prevent from happen again.

“We had Lancet come and put in this basically rubber coating on there, and that kept it so the stuff wasn’t growing for a couple of years, but it’s back,” he said. “I’ve been trying to research the best way to get it off, and it doesn’t harm our building. Right now, it’s not aesthetically pleasing; we have a beautiful building.”

He said the “mossy stuff” color depends on how damp and hot it is outside.

The solution remains a work in progress.
