CLAREMONT, NH — It took the Cardinals a while to get going but once they did, everything came together. Ten goals found the net as freshman sharpshooter Payton Ferland planted 5 of those goals on the night.
With the return of defense standout Bella Bovell, the Cardinal defense gained another weapon as Cardinal keeper Audrina Pelton notched her 4th shutout and 6th win of the season.
“I am one of 11 players on the field, and we all want to improve every minute we play” said midfielder Addison Derosier. Derosier had one of her best games of the season playing deep in the diamond and dominating her space.
Once Ferland poked her first goal into the net, the pressure faded away and she would rip the net 4 more times with some help from her friends.
“The midfield was really good as always and put the ball in great positions for me to look toward the goal,” said Ferland.
Maddy Chambers planted one into the cage then Kaiya Richards followed as the Cardinals led 6-0 at the break. Anytime Mascoma looked to counterattack, the Cardinal defense wanted no part of it. Nevaeh LeBland was a rock in the middle while Maddy Lavarnway and Maya Rice were just too fast for the Royals attackers.
“I want everyone to come to every practice and game and play hard, and we are,” said Stevens Head Coach Tim St. Pierre, who had six freshmen on the field at times during the match. “We are gaining but we have to improve every time we step on the field.”
Chambers and Ferland would add goals in the second half while Richards would add two goals of her own to close out the scoring. Maddy Minckler looked to pass first on the night with very unselfish play and grabbed an assist while Richards, Ferland, Derosier, LaVarnway, Bovell and Faith Norton all gave out assists.
Stevens improved to 6-1-1 and will face Kearsarge on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. as they look to avenge their only loss of the season.
