CONCORD, NH — Sunapee took its first loss of the season to a skilled and hard-working Concord Christian Academy team in Concord. The same team that exited the Lakers from the tournament last season used the same game plan and outworked Sunapee from start to finish. “We kind of fell apart there in the first half allowing three goals in 15 minutes, but we rallied and defended better in the second half, only allowing one goal and creating some opportunities for ourselves,” said Sunapee Head Coach Myles Cooney. “They are a really good team. We need to give maximum effort to compete with them and we just didn’t have it tonight.” Some bright spots for Sunapee included the continued strong play of Annaliese Rowell in net, a stronger second half and a chance for the entire roster to play against a likely strong contender in the division.
Woodsville
After some postponed games and lousy weather, the Lakers were back in action Friday night versus the Woodsville Engineers, a strong team in the north with a strong record. “I was excited to see if the girls could rebound from our performance against CCA; Woodsville is a strong program and a hard place to grab a win,” Cooney said. “We were looking to reveal a little character tonight.” The Lakers didn’t back down in a 50/50 game that had a lot of midfield play and improved effort from the team. “We are still not where we want to be, but we know where we want to go,” Cooney said. “We made strides tonight.” The teams went into halftime knotted at zero and Sunapee struck first in the second half off a strong effort from Clare Tuohy. That effort resulted in a loose ball above the 18 that Sophie Bourque fired into the upper 90 of the frame for a 1-0 advantage. Both teams went back to the midfield battle before Tuohy broke free again; she rang the post, and the rebound came to Sunapee midfielder Amelia Slack who found Bourque on her way to goal. She didn’t panic and put the Lakers up front 2-0. Woodsville would answer in the final minutes of the game, but Sunapee held its ground behind scrappy play from the Sunapee’s defense led by Madison Hughes and Jenna Caron. Woodsville took the hard-earned win. “I think many players contributed to the victory today, some kids won key scrums, some rotated and defended when it appeared we were beaten in the back, Annaliese was strong again in net, we played multiple kids up top and on the outside,” Cooney said. “We struggled at times, but Woodsville is a solid program, and this is the type of effort you hope for after the CCA game.” Sunapee is now 5-1 and returns to action Monday at Newport High School. — This recap was submitted by Sunapee Coach Myles Cooney.
