NEWPORT, NH — After the death of a five-year-old child on Monday, Oct. 4, Newport police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to learn how the tragedy occurred.
On Monday, Newport emergency responders received a report a child was unresponsive and not breathing. Police and fire personnel responded and attempted lifesaving care, transporting the child to Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont, where the child was pronounced dead.
Identifying information is “being withheld at this time due to privacy concerns,” according to a press release issued by Newport Police Chief Stephen A. Lee.
Lee’s statement made clear that “there was no evidence of physical trauma, and there is no danger to the public.”
The child’s family is “fully cooperating” with a joint investigation by the Newport Police Department, Claremont Police Department and New Hampshire State Police.
Part of that investigation is an examination of the child conducted Tuesday by New Hampshire Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jennie Duval.
“A determination as to the cause and manner of death is pending further testing at this time,” Lee’s release stated.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Alexander Marvin at 603-863-3232 or [email protected].
