SUNAPEE, NH — In its annual rite of fall, the Boys and Girls Club of Central New Hampshire hosted its popular Duck Drop fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 8, at Mount Sunapee Resort. The event was from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 3 p.m.
The seventh annual event signaled the official beginning of fall in the Upper Valley region. Hundreds of area families attend each year. Funds raised by the drop supports the Boys and Girls Club organization, which offers childcare, summer camp and after-school programs for children of all ages.
The Duck Drop consists of a ski lift ride where participants throw small rubber ducks at targets below them to win prizes as they ride up the scenic Sunapee mountain. The prizes are donated by sponsors that include several local businesses.
The targets under the chairlifts are built by the sponsoring companies and the duck closest to the bullseye-style target is the winner. For the basin-style targets, a single duck is drawn at random to determine the winner, unless there are multiple prizes. If there are multiple prizes there can be multiple winners.
The event also featured bouncy houses, axe throwing activities and refreshments.
The ducks sold out a few days before the drop online with a staggering sale of 21,000 ducks, which amounts to $149,904, making their seven-year total $716,184. According to organizer Brett Cusick this is their biggest duck drop to date.
